She was screaming, “No, you are not. You were rude and ungrateful. I can’t believe how you acted. And the language that came out of your mouth. Where did you hear that? Did you hear it from the neighborhood kids? Did you? It was that nasty piece of work Cary from down the street wasn’t it?”

“No. Mary Shay told me the bad words.” Kelly held up the charred remains of the doll. Blackened, ugly, the insides swelling out from places where the seams had burned away. There was only one eye left, it was fixed, creepy.

“Liar,” Stephanie shouted as she stomped passed her daughter and into the kitchen. “Mary Shay is a doll and dolls do not tell little girls to use bad words.”

Kelly chased after her mother. “It’s true, Mommy. I promise.”

“I don’t believe you. Your promises mean nothing. Nothing! You promised that you would behave. And what did you do? You tried to kill everyone. I can’t believe you. You’re sick. You’re evil. There is something wrong with you.” She slapped the doll out of her child’s hands. It left a warm black smear across the back of her hand.

“Mommy, I’m sorry.”

“Shut up, Kelly. I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to hear anything from you right now.” She pulled a glass out of the dishwasher and then took a large bottle of booze from the cabinet. She gulped down several swigs right from the bottle. She stood there and stared at the ceiling for a long time. She could feel her daughter’s unwavering gaze. She was fighting the powerful desire to hit, to slap, to beat, to pound.

“Mommy?”

“Don’t talk to me, Kelly,” she warned.

“I didn’t say anything, Mommy.”

“Just leave me alone. Go to your room. Now!”

Kelly dashed over to her dolly, snatched her up, and then ran upstairs to her room. She slammed the door and began to cry. Hiding under her covers didn’t seem to offer any comfort. Not even the sweet little hugs from the burned Mary Shay soothed the saddened child. “Tell me one of your little stories, whisper it in my ear,” she said to the doll. “Kiss me and lick me. No, I changed my mind. That tickles,” she said and pushed Mary Shay away. She wiped the sooty wetness from her neck.

The blackened doll snuggled down into the child’s pillow. “Imagine,” Mary Shay whispered, “her throat cut and her head dangling off the side of the bed. There would be so much blood, a river of it.”

Kelly didn’t blink as she stared in wide-eyed fascination at her wall. “I can see it now. What an odd angle Mommy’s head is at. How long will the blood gush out? Do you think her eyes would stay open? Would she feel the pain if we did it when she was asleep? Don’t we want her to feel the pain?”

Mary Shay crawled from her nest in the pillow, climbed up the little girl’s side and perched on her shoulder as she licked Kelly’s earlobe.
